FUTURA 2000

FUTURA 2000 rapidly gained recognition through the abstract graffiti on New York subway trains in the early 70s. He was 15 years old when he started his career as a «writer » and worked with other future great names including Ali with whom he founded the collective S.A. (Soul Artists).
Leader of the « Abstract Graffiti » movement, he is the first one to paint a « whole car » without any lettering. Its lyrical abstraction, a unique artistic language on New York walls, soon becomes its brand recognition, its « tag ». The singularity of his line, as thin as a pencil, as well as his mastery of the aerosol paint strokes participate in its ascent into the graffiti’s world and that of contemporary art.
His career indeed illustrates the turning point of the 70s and 80s when the graffiti integrates the cultural landscape of New York as being exposed in the Bronx, the East Village and the Lower East Side galleries. FUTURA left the underground to access studios without much difficulty – the transition from wall to canvas was then considered by some graffiti artists as a denial of the graffiti culture and its codes. The variety of media he uses, of his experiments and collaborations boostes his imagination and his artistic vitality.

Considered as a graffiti icon, FUTURA 2000 has a strong influence on an entire generation thanks to the virtuosity of his style and to the inventive and personal universe he created, just like Basquiat and Haring with whom he exhibited in 1981.  Making art is FUTURA’s connection to the world and his way out of it. His frescoes depict a fictional world where the expressionism of colors confronts the fastness of lines. A highly sensitive, impulsive and orchestrated energy which evokes his belonging to the street.
Today, FUTURA depicts the reality of his own world through the World Wide Web.  His website is a genuine virtual diary, a new and instantaneous medium of expression, a logical extension for this complete artist who still innovates and surprises us.
